This command is different from Fetch. During fetch, you throw, say a ball and send your dog across the back yard to retrieve it and bring it back to you. This is a great game to play with your dog outside.

“Get a toy” is just what it sounds like. When you tell your dog “get a toy”, your dog will run around the house looking for a toy. Any toy will dog and brings it to you.

To start training, gather all of your dogs “inside toys”. While sitting in a chair, get your dog interested in the toy by squeaking it or shaking it.

Toss the toy about 2 – 3 feet away from you as you say “get at toy”. As soon as your dog puts their mouth on the toy say “good girl or boy”.

As your dog turns toward you, do not grab the toy from their mouth immediately. Instead, pet their body and continue saying “good girl or boy”. This will insure that your dog will bring the toy all the way to you.

Now, grab the next toy and repeat. Repeat until you have gone through all of the toys.

Practice several times each day for about 1 week.

Week 2, lay out all of your dogs toys on the floor and point and tell them “get a toy”. Remember to praise verbally and physically.

Week 3, try asking your dog to “get a toy” from the kitchen or another room in the house. During this time of practice, there should be no distraction in the house.

Eventually you will be able to give your dog the command when your guest walk into your house.
