Performing CPR on a dog can be a life-saving skill for pet owners and professionals alike. Just like humans, dogs can experience cardiac arrest or respiratory failure, and knowing how to administer CPR can make a critical difference in their chances of survival.

Assessing the Situation

1. Begin by assessing the dog’s condition. Check for responsiveness by gently tapping the dog and calling its name.

2. If the dog is unresponsive, check for breathing by placing your hand in front of its nose and mouth.

3. If the dog is not breathing, check for a pulse by feeling for a heartbeat near the armpit or on the inside of the hind leg.

Administering CPR

1. Lay the dog on its right side on a flat surface.

2. Position yourself behind the dog’s back and place your hands over the widest part of the dog’s ribcage.

3. Begin chest compressions by pressing down firmly, using both hands for larger dogs and one hand for smaller dogs.

4. Perform 30 chest compressions at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute.

5. After the compressions, tilt the dog’s head back to open the airway and administer rescue breaths.

6. Seal your mouth over the dog’s nose and blow gently into its nostrils, watching for chest rise.

7. Give two rescue breaths, then resume chest compressions.

Precautions to Keep in Mind

1. Do not perform CPR on a conscious or breathing dog.

2. Be cautious of potential injuries, such as broken ribs, when administering chest compressions.

3. Avoid applying too much pressure during chest compressions to prevent further harm.

4. Do not administer rescue breaths if the dog’s chest is rising on its own.

5. Seek professional veterinary care as soon as possible after performing CPR.
